Ever wanted to read, chill out or get some work done, but find your home dull and uninspiring, and chain cafés too noisy and crowded? Check out these 7 beautiful cafés, that are perfect for you to spend your day focused on that book you’ve been meaning to finish, an exciting new project you’ve been dying to work on, or to simply watch the day pass you by.
Hidden in a quiet neighbourhood behind the Jalan Besar stadium, it’s easier to walk right past The Bravery than to find it (we did just that). But persist, and you’ll be rewarded with great food and even better coffee, served in a cosy, unpretentious setting. Be warned, though – with an eclectic mix of industrial-themed furniture, cellophaned windows and signature aluminium horse installation, you might spend more time taking pictures than getting any real work done.
Location: 66 Horne Rd
Wednesday to Monday: 8am to 9pm
Closed on Tuesdays
Situated at the corner of sleepy Owen Road, L’Etoile has just gone through a major revamp – and our lazy afternoons are all the better for it. L’Etoile’s indie French-Japanese influences are evident in this dual-floored establishment, with mismatched vintage furniture contrasting with their bright, minimalist décor, and quirky lifestyle items sold on the first floor. The perfect place for banging away on the laptop, reading or catching up with friends over food.

Weekends & Public Holidays: 9am to 10pm
Take a short walk down the City Square shopping centre, and you’ll find this jewel on Rangoon Road (pun totally intended). As a café + bar concept, Jewel’s mouth-watering range of grub is wider than your average café, with delectable offerings such as the Chilli Crab Pasta and Salt and Pepper Squid. And with two spacious floors, great artisanal coffee and cool tracks on repeat, there’re not many better places to dine, chill out, or get your work on.

With fledgling cafés shutting down faster than you can spell “latte”, and new ones taking their place just as quickly, it can seem like Five and Dime has been around forever. Situated within a spectacular black-and-white colonial building and facing a busy sidewalk, this stalwart exudes a lovely Parisian vibe. Our fave spot in this establishment? The seats facing the window.

You’ve not visited Miss Molly’s till you’ve tried their signature rainbow cake, a colourful, decadent confection that’s equally at ease as an appetizer or dessert. This hip, spacious establishment is quiet in the day, which makes it ultra-conducive for reading or working. But it can get a tad crowded in the evenings, thanks to starved white collars that visit for dinner.

Fridays and Saturdays: 12pm to 12am
Sundays: 3pm to 11pm
Three spacious floors, an abundance of power sockets and artisanal muffins. What more could you ask for? Check out their lunch sets, salads and of course their muffin roster, which includes quirky delights such as the Lychee Raspberry muffin and the Green Eggs and Ham muffin. Looking to get some work done? Check in after 2pm, when the lunch crowd subsides. Stay till the evenings and The Muffinry turns into The Tipsy Owl, with an assortment of cocktails for you to wash your stress away.
